Module 10: Backup & Recovery

Backups are boring until they aren’t. This module is about making sure that when something goes wrong — ransomware, hardware failure, a well-intentioned rm -rf — you have a working recovery path and the confidence to use it.

You’ll start with strategy: figuring out which data actually matters, how much loss is acceptable, and how quickly you need to be back up. From there you’ll work through the tools — tar, rsync, dd, LVM snapshots, and Borgmatic — with enough hands-on practice to understand not just what they do, but when to use each one.

The module ends where backup work really gets tested: recovery. A backup nobody has ever restored from is just a guess. You’ll practice actual restores, write a recovery runbook, and set up monitoring so you know when something breaks before you need it.
